DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION & PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT

No Longer Empty (NLE) activates engagement with art and social issues through site-responsive and community-centered exhibitions integrated with educational and cultural programming. Sited in distinctive urban settings, our holistic approach creates participatory platforms for art and exchange that explore the layered histories and critical issues of each unique place.

NLE is seeking a Director of Education & Public Engagement to lead, plan and manage its education initiatives, community partnerships, and public engagement.

The Director of Education and Public Engagement:

• serves as a key member of the leadership team, contributing to overall institution growth, communications, and development

• leads and grows NLE’s flagship education programs

• develops ongoing partnerships with community organizations across the five-boroughs for long-term engagement and reciprocal capacity building

This is an opportunity to work with the NLE team, artists, community members and organizational partners to develop innovative practices in art education, community engagement and curatorial practice. Reports to the Executive Director.

The Director of Education and Public Engagement works closely with fellow core staff to create and present site-responsive and community-centered projects. This position is ideal for a person that is ready to take creative risks and strategically build programs based on identified community needs as well as NLE’s goals.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Be responsible for the growth, management, and assessment of NLE educational programs and public engagement strategies to better serve audiences of all ages

• Develop and manage the implementation of the education and public engagement annual plan and schedule

• Build ongoing partnerships for education programs

• Develop, refine and assess NLE´s curriculum and learning resources

• Design, develop content and coordinate exhibition interpretation materials and tours for diverse audiences

• Maintain budgets, write reports, and track key performance indicators

• Oversee development of NLE’s internship program

• Develop content for grants and conduct fundraising and prospect cultivation at the individual, government, foundation and corporate levels with Executive Director

• Represent NLE in relevant professional activities including conferences and group meetings to maintain an awareness of current practices and issues in art education, youth development, and accessibility to the arts

• Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

• Master’s Degree or equivalent experience required in art education, arts administration, social practice, or related fields

• Minimum of five years programmatic and staff management experience

• Demonstrated interest in contemporary art and socially engaged art practices

• Experience with community outreach and developing partnerships with cultural, educational, and social organizations

• Robust knowledge of NYC’s 5-boroughs, network of relationships with public schools, local social service organizations

• Experience in developing approaches that recognized the social/cultural topography of each site

• Demonstrated ability to both envision and execute a broad range of educational programming and public events

• Track record of leadership, managing staff, and exceptional interpersonal skills

• Strong written and oral communications and presentation skills

• Strong computer skills (facility with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Adobe Creative Suite)

• Experience in looking at the big picture and generating insightful, creative solutions

• Second language skills a major plus (particularly Spanish speakers)

• Availability to work evenings and weekends is required

This is a full-time position, with benefits. Salary commensurate with experience.
