To Apply
Email info@sonyaonline.org with subject line: Teaching Artist.
Please include:
a brief cover letter in the body of the email
a sample proposal idea of a public art project with high school students in
the subjects of Math, Science, Restorative Justice or Global History. These
proposals can be for indoor or outdoor projects and should be geared for
whole class participation (25-30 students). We are open to anything from
mural projects to sound installations to interactive Multi-Media film and
photography. We ask that you think about integration to the subject,
student involvement and community involvement. We have a strong partnership
with The Graham Avenue Business Improvement District and will facilitate
community involvement where needed. For example: Restorative Justice class:
students will build painted chalkboards hung throughout the school with
sentence starter prompts and attached boxes of chalk, giving all students a
positive outlet for their impulses to write and self-express. In Math,
paint metal shop gates along Graham Ave with visualizations of equivalent
proportions. For Living Environment class, build colorful, raised-bed herb
gardens to beautify Graham Ave tree pits or The Green School Garden,
studying the ecology of the urban environment. Or study cultural diffusion
and integrate art and Global History by painting the steps to Salsa dancing
along East Williamsburg’s Music Avenue - Moore Street.
