An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and AAM accredited, the
Japanese American National Museum (www.janm.org) is recognized as one of
the nation’s premier cultural museums. In 2010 the Japanese American
National Museum received America’s highest honor for museums, the federal
IMLS National Medal. The National Museum is located adjacent to the Metro
Gold Line in the Little Tokyo/Arts district in downtown Los Angeles, a
neighborhood that has experienced an exciting revitalization with diverse
new restaurants, shops, luxury apartments, and nightlife. Home of the
National Center for the Preservation of Democracy, and based in the
historic Little Tokyo neighborhood, it has a nation-wide focus and
international base of support.
The Public Programs Assistant will work closely with the Program Manager to
coordinate and develop content for public programs to engage a diverse
visitor base and attract new audiences. Public Programs will include
lectures, book signings, film screenings, performances and workshops
related to the changing exhibitions scheduled which have featured artist
like Kip Fullbeck, Eric Nakamura and collaboration with organizations like
Go for Broke, Dodgers, and the Smithsonian Institution. Key responsibility
will be working on Family programming like Oshogatsu, Summer Festival and
Target Free Family Days.
Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of one year successful experience in
organizing programs and events for a diverse audience, museum programming
preferred. Knowledge of Japanese American culture and communities
preferred. Knowledge of community and vendor contacts that are applicable
to Museum programs. Knowledge of stage and performing arts set-ups and
operations. Availability to work on weekends and evenings. Comfortable with
public speaking in a large and small group format and ability engage with
the public, staff and volunteers. Ability to write program notes, routine
reports, and correspondence. Familiarity with VISTA software and basic HTML
