The Organization:
Charlotte Street Foundation is a nationally leading, artist centered, non-profit organization based in Kansas City, Missouri, whose mission is to challenge, nurture, and empower artists of exceptional vision. Believing that artists and art represent a valuable creative, social and economic resource, Charlotte Street-with its community of artists-plays a catalytic role in making Kansas City a vibrant, creative metropolis, alive with collaboration, passion, and ideas.
The organization was founded in 1997 by David Hughes, Jr. to support and recognize outstanding visual artists in Kansas City through direct cash awards. Since its launch over 15 years ago, Charlotte Street has grown and evolved dynamically, developing programs that engage and propel leading-edge artists of exceptional vision while fostering collaboration and a strong sense of community in Kansas City.
Programs and initiatives, informed by dialogue focused on the real needs of the creative community, now include awards for visual and generative performing artists, project-based grants, studio residencies, a curatorial residency, exhibition and performance programming, and a range of professional development and educational programs for emerging and established artists based in Kansas City. A deep and sustained investment in the work and lives of individual artists, and strong commitment to fostering community and connections among them, is central to Charlotte Street's work.
A core value of the organization is to be nimble, proactive, and responsive to an evolving cultural landscape. Operating strategically, Charlotte Street Foundation has formed alliances to organize and host programs throughout the city in partnership with other arts organizations and with property owners in the urban core.
Charlotte Street Foundation's annual operating budget is approximately $650,000, with an additional $280,000 in-kind. The staff includes three full-time employees, four part-time employees, and numerous interns and volunteers who provide ongoing support throughout the year. A 12-member Board of Directors is active and engaged, reflecting a diverse range of expertise and perspectives.
Charlotte Street Foundation is highly respected by regional and national funders and program collaborators as a model organization for its multi-faceted support of artists, community impact, strong fiscal management, and history of successful and impactful mission-oriented partnerships.
The Position:
The Executive Director is a passionate advocate for the mission, vision, programs, and values of the Charlotte Street Foundation. The Executive Director provides dynamic, multi-dimensional organizational leadership for staff, supporters, and the artists' community it serves, and hands-on management of the organization's ongoing operations. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and works strategically with the Board and Director of Artistic Programs to successfully fulfill the organization's vision and outcomes.
Experience:
The Executive Director of Charlotte Street Foundation is an accomplished and highly regarded leader with experience in not-for-profit management and a deep appreciation for artists and contemporary art. The best fit for the organization will be a passionate, dedicated, inspired thought leader who shares Charlotte Street's commitment to artists and community and who values innovation, experimentation, risk-taking, and dialogue in both organizational and artistic practice.This individual will foster an efficient and collaborative environment with priorities that consider and support sustainability, flexibility, and mutual respect. While ambition and productivity are highly valued, an ideal candidate will possess a leadership style that encourages a balance between life and work.
Educational Requirements: A minimum of a four-year degree from an accredited institution, or an appropriate combination of education and experience.
