Humanities Manager, Public Programs & Artist Talks

Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), an internationally recognized presenter of
contemporary performing arts and cinema, seeks a full-time Humanities
Manager, Public Programs and Artist Talks to develop and implement a variety
of Humanities programs. These programs aim to enrich the experience of BAM
audiences beyond their attendance at the performance alone by providing them
with access to discussions with artists and experts in the field. The
Manager reports to the Director of Education and Humanities.
Responsibilities:
* Co-curate with the Director the content and participants for all
Humanities events and manage these events, including Artist Talks and other
initiatives:
* Research potential moderators and panelists for Artist Talks, keynote
speaker for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day at BAM, speakers for Met Opera Live
in HD series and for other Humanities initiatives
* Research artists and projects under consideration
* Develop and implement Humanities programming for special initiatives
* Attend and oversee implementation of all Humanities events which are
usually held in the evenings or on Saturdays
* Interact with artists and artist management involved in productions at
BAM to plan and implement Humanities programs
* Collaborate with other BAM departments on the Eat, Drink, and Be
Literary series
* Manage BAM's collaboration with New York University
* Collect, write, and edit biographical and other information for program
playbills, flyers, and brochures for Humanities events and oversee the
production of these materials
* Draft letters of agreement between BAM and Humanities participants
* Arrange travel, tickets, and other artist services for Humanities
participants
* Work with other BAM departments and staff on production for Humanities
events
* Research, collect and distribute materials on productions for
Humanities participants
* Develop and manage special Humanities events such as master classes
* Manage the education programs Shakespeare Teaches Students and
Shakespeare Teaches Teachers (in-school residencies and teacher professional
development programs)
* Participate in planning and implementation of other Education and
Humanities programs as appropriate.
* Create and monitor budgets
Requirements:
* Bachelor's degree required; MFA in a performing arts discipline or a
background in dramaturgy preferred
* Minimum of three years' experience working in a cultural institution,
arts-in-education organization, or educational organization
* Experience curating speakers for humanities programs (e.g., panels of
artists, critics, and scholars, artist talks)
* Familiarity with BAM's artists and programming
* Extensive knowledge across the performing arts, literature, and related
scholarly fields, (including traditions, history, aesthetics, especially the
work of contemporary artists, critics, and scholars), a sensitivity to BAM's
mission and programming; a knowledge of cultural institutions and
commentators in NYC
* The ability to represent BAM to the public. A thorough understanding of
BAM's audience and their interests in terms of programming
* Ability to conduct research in the performing arts and literary fields
* Exceptional writing skills and ability to communicate effectively on
the telephone
* The ability to interact with internationally-renown artists with
discretion, professionalism and a knowledge of their work
* Computer literacy (MS Word for Windows, Excel and Internet fluency)
* Willingness to work nights and weekends as required
* Ability to speak in front of large groups of people
* Knowledge and creativity in creating curricula
* Interest in working at a non-profit performing arts organization
* Ability to read and understand budgets; create marketing materials
* Knowledge and experience working with artist contracts
* Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to multi-task and work
under pressure
* Highly organized with attention to detail with the ability to think
creatively and pragmatically
* Ability to demonstrate patience and interact in a friendly and
professional manner
* Ability to take on additional responsibilities as needed
Compensation: The salary for this position is in the mid-$40K's per year
(plus a full benefit package)
