Project
Collage Dance Theatre will be in residence at the urban office complex 7+FIG
in downtown Los Angeles, January 5-19, 2009. During this period company
artists and apprentices will explore themes of place, location and how they
intersect with the body and the self to define who we are. We will examine
the question of what does it mean to "know our place"? Taking inspiration
from relief maps, virtual maps, and political maps we will "follow
directions" creating fictional narratives (turn left at where you last heard
that argument) and express them physically and spatially. With a
200-foot-long piece of fabric we will cover and uncover ourselves and our
topographical surroundings measuring space with bodies and fabric to offer
positional relationships that put into question scientific order versus
poetic instinct. The residency will culminate in a performance that takes
the audience on a journey throughout the site.
Apprenticeship Info:
Apprentices will be expected to be onsite Friday afternoons from 12:00 NOON
to 3:00 PM throughout the course of the residency. They will also be
expected to attend performance rehearsals and the performance on February
19, 2009. Parking will be provided. A maximum 5 students will be selected
to participate as apprentices for the course of the residency.
About Collage Dance Theatre
Collage Dance Theatre (CDT) is a nonprofit, site-specific dance performance
company based in Los Angeles, California. We seek non-traditional venues
and methods for creating contemporary dance theater works. In developing
our choreography, we draw strongly on the history, community, and
architecture of each performance site. We actively seek collaborations with
artists, arts organizations, and community groups in order to forge a link
between professional performance, public space and audience. Founded in
1987 by Artistic Director Heidi Duckler, our performances feature dancers
and, frequently, other performers, interpreting and reacting to physical
sites and engaging audiences in innovative ways. CDT has presented over 50
performances in public spaces ranging from "Mother Ditch" in the Los Angeles
River, to "subVersions" in the historic Los Angeles Subway Terminal to
"Sleeping with the Ambassador" at the abandoned Ambassador Hotel and
recently in an elevated glass bridge in Hong Kong. CDT incorporates text,
video and original composition to produce works that integrate found talent
in found spaces to produce profound experiences with professional
performance. Together, CDT and Artistic Director Heidi Duckler have
received a total of eleven Lester Horton Awards for Outstanding Achievement
in Dance, including two each for both Choreography and Performance.
