GREAT LEAP announces
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: COLLABORATORY VI
Seeking artists* with a committed spiritual practice to develop a
collaborative
performance based on the theme of INTERFAITH COALITION-BUILDING
Founded in 1978 by Artistic Director Nobuko Miyamoto, Great Leap is a
non-profit performing arts organization that aims to deepen relations
between diverse peoples. In 2005 Great Leap introduced COLLABORATORY, a
free mentorship residency program to nurture cross-cultural
inter-community artistic collaboration and develop community leadership.
Previous rounds of COLLABORATORY have focused on themes such as
immigration, democracy, and care for the environment.
Led by Project Director Dan Kwong and Co-Facilitators Young-Ae Park and
Nobuko Miyamoto, COLLABORATORY VI will provide a sacred space for
exploration and exchange on the subject of interfaith
coalition-building.
*This call is open to any artist who feels they are a suitable
candidate. However, in the effort to build a more broadly-representative
group we are especially looking for male artists of Christian and/or
Muslim faiths. African American and/or Latino artists are strongly
encouraged to apply.
Selected artists will begin a workshop-process on November 1. Process
will include visiting various religious centers in Los Angeles, meeting
with local mentors/elders/“wisdom-keepers†, experiencing
master classes with guest teachers, and sharing your own personal
stories of faith with others. Participants will use autobiographical
material along with historical and contemporary sources to create
performative scenarios in a highly collaborative approach.
Collaboratory VI will culminate with public performances January 10 &
11, 2009 at the National Center for the Preservation of Democracy,
located at the Japanese American National Museum. In addition there are
plans to tour the performance to other local religious and spiritual
centers in 2009.
Emphasis will include:
How can multi-dimensional religious identities live side by side?
How can we navigate religious conflicts with intelligence and
compassion?
How can common and uncommon religious traditions co-exist in peace?
How can we create progressive and respectful visions for the future?
Workshop period: November 1 to December 27, 2008
Meetings: Twice a week; Wednesdays 7-10PM and Saturdays 12-5PM
No meetings: November 29, December 28 to January 2
Intensive Rehearsal period: January 3-9 (weekend days and weeknights)
Final performances: Sat, Sun January 10 & 11, 2009
APPLICANT SELECTION CRITERIA:
Artistic excellence (video samples highly encouraged)
Demonstrated experience and skill in collaboration
Commitment to and enthusiasm for the theme (a progressive positive
attitude)
Willingness to explore beyond your comfort zone in terms of religious
faith and artistic disciplines.
Good people-skills, ability to listen, no control freak-diva
tendencies…
