Arts Festival 2008: Art Goes Green!

Request for Artist's Proposals

The Cultural Arts Division of the City of Manhattan Beach Parks and
Recreation Department will host its 13th Annual Arts Festival on
Sunday, September 14th in the streets of Downtown Manhattan Beach.
The goal of the Arts Festival is to celebrate the arts byproviding a
place where everyone can experience and enjoy the art making process
at no cost. This year's theme is "Go Green," featuring eco-friendly
projects using recycled or reused materials.

Artists/educators are invited to propose hands-on workshops, suitable
for all ages. You can choose and sign up for an arts-and-crafts
project from our suggested activity list. (Please see the attachment
#1.) We also accept original projects that effectively convey the
Festival theme. Projects will be conducted continuously throughout
the day and should not exceed 30 minutes in length. Each artist
booth will have a 10'x10 or 10' x 20' tented area with tables and
chairs. Water and electricity can be provided by the City as needed.
Selected artists must be committed to working 10 am to 5 pm on the
festival day. In addition, a mandatory orientation and training
meeting is required for all artists on Saturday, September 6, 9 – 11
am. Artists will be training their volunteers on that day.

Eligibility and Budget
Artists/Educators demonstrating professional experience in workshop
facilitation are eligible to submit a proposal. Artists must be able
to work well in a busy environment of the festival and should have
excellent communication skills. Artist will be paid a total of $240.
Artists can not sell their work at the Arts Festival.

When planning your proposed activities, keep in mind that all
workshops are free to the public and that you will serve
approximately 30-40 guests per hour. We strongly recommend using
materials from our inventory for your project. (Please see the
attachment #2.) If additional supplies are needed, obtain approval
from Megumi Sando in advance. The City will purchase requested art
supplies through its vendors or reimburse the cost to the artist with
original receipts.

Selection Process
20 artists will be chosen for the event. The Arts Festival planning
committee is responsible for artist selections. Candidates will be
chosen based on their proposed activity, supply budget, resume and/or
oral interviews. A sample of the proposed project must accompany
your application, which is crucial for the decision making and could
also be used for publicity purposes.
