Dear Artistic Community,
Many of you—over 60 artists to date, have participated in my "eco-
logical" recycled billboard art shows called OFF THE WALL and OFF THE
WALL/2. For the last two years they've premiered in my gallery on
Earth Day to critical and financial success. As of the moment dozens
of pieces have been sold with sales totaling over $25,000. I am now
in the process of creating OFF THE WALL/3, which will open on the '07
Earth Day eve, April 21st
Backtracking a bit, I make functional art pieces from recovered
elements. Always on the lookout for castoff material some time ago I
learned that advertising billboards are thrown into landfills by the
ton weekly. As an answer to this eco-nightmare I developed a
stretcher system for the material. The canvasses are generally 4 x 4
feet or 8'x 8' and throughout the year I offer them to artists free
in exchange for exposure on my gallery exterior. All work on the
wall has a set purchase and commission price, decided by artist and
gallery in advance (several have sold "off the wall".)
Thanks to past success I now partner with the billboard companies
directly. For OTW/3 , beyond being provided the vinyl "canvass" I am
we are discussing them donating actual billboard display time for a
month to coincide with the show. Typically these are 14 x 48 feet
(!). The works will be painted directly on the recycled billboard
vinyl and displayed in various communities around LA. I hope to get
5-10 of these and obviously there will be a huge amount of publicity
associated with their display.
If the above sounds interesting to you please send some jpegs or
direct me to your web sites. Though for the OFF THE WALL/3 show
works will be inside, ultimately they may be exterior, seen high up—
maybe at 30mph so I find styles that are graphic rather than abstract
work best. Canvasses will begin to be available by mid-February.
There is no screening committee, just me, so please allow me time to
respond. The process of being selected as one of the BIG canvass
painters will be more involved, requiring studies and several rounds
of submissions. There will be some opportunity to paint these in the
gallery before the show but the ultimate logistics have yet to be
worked out.
Thank you and feel free to go to the eco-la.com website to see and
learn more about the gallery. An updating of the site is underway.
Email should be sent to eco-la@sbcglobal.net.
Sincerely
Peter Schulberg
