Since it opened in 2003, the Museo Picasso Málaga (MPM) has combined its commitment to the works of Pablo Picasso with the promotion of the social role of art. The position of Artistic Director of the museum will become vacant on December 31, 2023. The MPM makes an international call for applications to fill the post of Artistic Director, based on the principles of merit, ability, suitability and transparency.
The Selection Committee will be made up of professionals from the art world, whose names will be announced before 15th April.

Summary
The Artistic Director of the MPM is subject to the authority of the Executive Board of the MPM.
Their duties are:
To direct the artistic contents of the MPM’s activity
–To coordinate and plan the activities of the departments of which they are in charge
–To manage the museum’s permanent collection
–To facilitate and coordinate the MPM’s collaboration with the Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso
–To design and manage the MPM’s exhibition programme and cultural activities /
–To supervise the museum’s educational activities as well as those related to the library and the archive /
–To safeguard the protection and conservation of the MPM’s cultural and artistic heritage /
–To strengthen and coordinate the MPM’s research office /
–To promote cooperation with similar institutions in Spain and abroad /
–To represent the museum and perform whatever management and representation duties are required and so requested by the MPM’s Executive Board.
The job offers a private senior management contract for at least 5 years, which may be renewed for a further 5 years. Remuneration for the position will be given in the rules published on the MPM website.
Application requirements
–The candidate must have the nationality of an EU member state or be entitled to freedom of movement within the European Union. Or they must have a resident’s and work permit in Spain.
–They must hold a bachelor’s degree or similar higher education qualification in areas related to history of art, fine arts or humanities.
–They must have a command of written and spoken Spanish and English, and a good level of written and spoken French. Knowledge of other languages will be considered an additional asset.
–They must have at least 10 years’ professional experience coordinating or leading teams in areas of work related to history of art or fine arts. And they must have held positions of responsibility in managing or directing modern and contemporary art collections or museums, with special reference to European and American art.
–The application must be submitted in keeping with the full rules and using the form published on the MPM website, to be handed in to the MPM registry, in a closed envelope, at calle San Agustín 8, 29015 Málaga, or telematically to comisiongestion@mpicassom.org.
The deadline for submitting candidacies is May 24, 2023, at 8pm. Submitting an application entails unconditional acceptance of the full rules.
The submitted documents must include an outline of the cultural and museum project, in Spanish and English, on between 20 and 30 pages, covering the next 5 years.
Before June 2, a check will be made to ensure the requirements have been met and, where applicable, a rectification of any defects will be requested. The deadline for receiving rectifications will end on June 7 at 8pm. Once the deadline for submitting applications and rectifications has ended, those that do not meet the requirements will be dismissed, as will any that have been submitted outside of the deadline for applications or rectifications.
Each candidate will be notified by email by June 14 at the latest, informing them as to whether their application has been admitted or dismissed, and the Selection Committee will be notified of the list of admitted candidates. The Selection Committee will have assessed the candidacies and selected the top six by July 7.
The personal interviews with the six best candidates will be held at the MPM between July 14 and September 12, at a specifically agreed time in each case. The Selection Committee will have selected the 3 best candidates by September 19, and it will submit these to the MPM, who will freely choose one of the three options between October 6–17.
The chosen candidate will be required to go to Malaga to take possession between October 24–31, and they will start work on the design for the 2024 and 2025 programme from November 1. On January 1, 2024, they will commence full duties as Artistic Director.
