Assistant Curator

The Noguchi Museum seeks an Assistant Curator. The position is primarily responsible for supporting the activities of the Curatorial Department, including exhibitions; research on Isamu Noguchi’s life and work; publications; and the production of Noguchi’s editioned works. The Assistant Curator will also develop all public programs relating to exhibitions, the collection, and Noguchi’s life and work. Reporting to the Senior Curator, the position works closely with the Registrar and Collections Manager, the Curator for Research and Digital Projects, the Editor of the Isamu Noguchi Catalogue Raisonné, and the Archivist, as well as the Director, Deputy Director, and CFO, and Education, Development, PR, and Operations departments. About the Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum The Noguchi Museum – chartered as The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum – was founded and designed by the acclaimed Japanese-American artist Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988) for the display of his life’s work. Opened in 1985 and located in Long Island City, Queens in a converted industrial building, the Museum is considered to be one of Noguchi’s greatest works. Today, the mission of the Museum is to advance the understanding and appreciation of Noguchi’s art and legacy. It manages the world’s most extensive collection of Noguchi’s sculptures, works on paper, architectural models, and designs, in addition to his complete archives. The Museum is also home to the Isamu Noguchi Catalogue Raisonne. Through its rich collection, exhibitions, and programming, the Museum facilitates scholarship and learning for audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Essential duties and responsibilities • Participating in research, object list development, budgeting, loan management, installation, and documentation for all assigned exhibitions.

• Collaborative maintenance and constant improvement of the Museum’s collections data in all formats and systems.

• Responsibility for maintaining and improving core Noguchi data resources such as the biography/chronology, exhibition history, and bibliography.

• Helping to research, write, and oversee the production of Museum publications.

• Developing ideas for speakers and subjects for public programs; overseeing the planning for those programs; and managing day-of program logistics.

• Maintaining the exhibition and curatorial calendar and communicating all dates and changes across departments.

• Providing support to the Senior Curator and Deputy Director in the execution of exhibition agreements.

• Providing administrative support to the Curatorial department while anticipating the needs of the Senior Curator.

• Promoting Noguchi’s legacy

• Participating in the development, fabrication, and promotion of Noguchi’s play sculptures and other works.

• Assisting the development and communications departments in providing information on exhibitions and public programs for grants and external communications.

Requirements

• Must have a Master’s Degree in art history or curatorial studies.

• 2–3 years of curatorial experience in a comparable environment

• Strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills

• Strong research skills

• An impeccable work ethic

• Possess accuracy, attention to detail, the ability to prioritize and follow-through

• Team player with a collaborative ethos

• Ability to work with artists

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and with graphics and photo editing programs

• A profound interest in Isamu Noguchi

The Assistant Curator position is full-time and located in The Noguchi Museum in Long Island City, Queens. Hours are 5 days a week, 9 am–5 pm, Monday– Friday. Evening events and meetings and weekend commitments are an occasional requirement of the position. Work is typically performed in an office environment; prolonged periods of sitting, use of computers and standard office equipment required to accomplish work objectives. Salary is $42,000 per year and benefits include a generous health insurance program, a 403(b) retirement savings plan with company match, and paid time off, as well as other benefits.
