from Franklin Furnace
Job Title: Public Process Educator and Program Coordinator
Position Summary
SculptureCenter seeks a dynamic and experienced arts educator to lead Public
Process, its annual education program for high school students.
Public Process is a free three-week summer program for 10 to 15 students that
explores public art, urban planning, and architecture. In an intensive lineup of field
trips, guest lectures, and discussion sessions, students explore the city and engage
firsthand with the artists and professionals who shape the cultural and civic life of
New York. At the end of the program, students visit artists in their studios to
evaluate proposals for a temporary public artwork for Long Island City. Together,
they form a panel to select a winning commission to be produced by SculptureCenter
the following summer. Past Public Process classes have commissioned public
artworks by Alejandro Cesarco, Xaviera Simmons, Mika Tajima, and Matt Keegan
(forthcoming).
The Public Process Educator and Program Coordinator is responsible for
developing and implementing an engaging fifteen-day curriculum that provides
students with the perspective and tools to meet with artists in their studios and
evaluate their proposals in artistic and practical terms. The Educator leads
discussion sessions, encourages participation, guides conversations with outside
guests, and synthesizes key information presented over the course of the program.
This position requires full availability during the dates of the summer 2019
program as well as additional hours for coordination, planning, and evaluation in the
months before and immediately after.
This position reports to the Director of Exhibitions and Programs and works
collaboratively with SculptureCenter’s staff and interns.
Dates for the 2019 program are July 8 to 26, 2019. The program meets Monday
through Friday, 9am to 2pm at SculptureCenter’s offices in Long Island City and/or
at field trip sites around the city.
