The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs is seeking a Director of Operations for its Materials for the Arts program (MFTA). The program receives material donations from the private and public sector and makes these donations available to New York City’s not-for-profit arts and cultural community, and the public schools. Materials for the Arts is a waste reduction/materials donation program that processes more than $9 million dollars annually in goods to 4,300 cultural organizations and arts programs at social, health and community service organizations and the NYC public schools.

Reporting to the Deputy Director of Materials for the Arts, the Director of Operations performs responsible work in the supervision of warehouse staff and overseeing warehouse operations. This includes planning, implementation, coordination, monitoring and evaluation of all warehouse activities to increase efficiency, productivity and accountability within the operation, and helping to expand and grow the program.

The Director of Operations supervises all warehouse activities; including administrative and facility maintenance issues and ensures compliance with all program and agency policies and procedures. Diverse responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Directs donation intake processing and warehouse inventory;

• Coordinates all trucking activities this includes truck routing, mover drivers schedules, and the planned maintenance, repair, registration of vehicles, and parking of MFTA truck fleet;

• Monitors and analyze warehouse inventory and conducts research to identify potential donors, and follows through with efficient and professional communication and outreach to increase donations to the program;

• Supervises warehouse staff including drivers, and donations team;

• Reviews and updates MFTA’s donations database to ensure accuracy;

• Prepares analysis and reports as needed;

• Administers all inquiries/complaints in an efficient manner and ensures issues are met with resolve;

• Participates in the development and execution of short and long range strategic planning, objectives and new initiatives;

• Represents MFTA to the field at conferences and events and to potential donors.

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or

2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or

3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

Preferred Skills

The successful candidate will have proven supervisory experience; a background in warehousing/trucking, and working with a diverse constituency; a working knowledge of, and interest or experience in the City’s arts and cultural community and the areas of reuse and sustainability; excellent communication (written and verbal) skills, decision making and employee relations skills; strong computer skills; the ability to work productively under pressure, both independently and as a team member. In addition, must be a creative problem solver.

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
