The Autry seeks a temporary Preparator II to help build and prepare galleries and cases for exhibitions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
* Works under the supervision of the Head Preparator
* May aid Head Preparator with supervising teams of Temporary Preparators in executing projects
* Has the ability to read and build from architectural plans and drawings, and can communicate about them to others
* Does work related to the preparation, installation, lighting, and maintenance of permanent installations, and preparation and set up for special exhibitions and events as needed
* Builds and paints exhibition furniture
* Constructs and prepares props, backgrounds and special lighting effects for exhibits; uses hand and power tools; constructs and finishes and paints temporary partitions
* Moves, opens, unpacks and packs crates with exhibition materials and objects
* Prepares, hangs, installs and de-installs works of art and artifacts utilizing proper handling and security techniques to the satisfaction of the Exhibition Designer, the Conservator, the Curator and the Collections Managers
* Organizes and manages tasks from start to finish, from making materials lists to cleaning up work areas
* Tracks shop tools and materials inventory
* The Autry reserves the right to add or change duties at any time
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
* Self-motivated, reliable, detail oriented individual who has the ability to focus, but can also switch gears quickly when urgent matters arise
* Must possess strong written and oral communication skills
* Must possess strong organizational skills
* Must have knowledge of utilization of power and hand tools
* Must have knowledge and understanding of a wide range of materials and the techniques to apply to them
* Must be able to work at heights of over 8 feet
* Must be able to perform physical tasks, including bending, kneeling, pulling, pushing, walking, standing for long periods of time, and lifting up to 60 pounds
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
* At least 5 years' experience installing, moving, packing and handling art and/or artifacts
* At least 5 years' experience as a rough or finish carpenter, or similar experience resulting in proficiency with construction and fabrication with a variety of materials
WORKING CONDITIONS
Involves working in construction zones, woodshop, warehouse spaces, collections storage areas and galleries.
