The Music Center's 2016 Institute for Educators. This week-long arts integration training for K-8 educators will breathe life into American nonfiction and informational texts through theatre and movement, drawing primarily from hip hop dance. Held July 18-22, it will focus on expressing American texts from multiple sources - including the founding of our country, civil rights movements, and innovations in math, science, and technology. GETTY FOUNDATION AWARDS $8.5 MILLION TO LATINO ARTS GROUPS. Grants will support forty-three Latino- and Latin America-themed arts and cultural events across Southern California presented by museums and arts institutions that have agreed to participate in the foundation's Pacific Standard Time: Los Angeles/Latin America series, which is scheduled to kick off in the fall of 2017. "No one has ever put so many Latin American shows together at one time, especially side by side with shows by Latino artists — so people could dialogue about it." Deborah Marrow, the foundation's director, told the Los Angeles Times. On February 20, 2016 Vallejo’s “Make ‘Em All Mexican; Brown Oscars” series was featured on the cover of the Los Angeles Times Calendar Section in an article entitled “A different picture: Linda Vallejo’s series imagines an all-Latino awards lineup” written by Carolina A Martinez. The project was a collaboration with Chon Noriega and the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center with the aim of bringing attention to the lack of diversity in the Academy Awards. Accompanying articles were published by ARTnews, Fusion.com, Remezcla.com, UCLA Bruin, and Vallejo and Noriega were interviewed by KPCC Radio. Vallejo’s “MEAM: Super Hombre II” is included in “My Hero: Contemporary Art & Supreme Action,” in a traveling exhibit initiated by The Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek, CA., curated by Carrie Lederer opening on January 14, 2016 and traveling to nine national locations through December 2018. Vallejo will serve as co-curator with Betty Ann Brown for the Self Help Graphics Getty Initiative PST: LA/LA exhibition entitled “El Dia de Los Muertos: Past, Present, and Future” to open in Los Angeles in September 2017.
