FLSA Status: ExemptGeneral Statement:The San Diego Museum of Man is seeking a full-time Exhibit Designer to join our dynamic Exhibits team. The Exhibit Designer develops the design, floor plans, and graphics to implement all of the Museum’s exhibits projects. This includes working with the exhibits team and other departments to create and implement an exhibits schedule and to collaborate with the Graphic Designer to produce exhibit branding, collateral, signage, and web content that is consistent with the Museum’s design aesthetic.Summary of Responsibilities:Reporting to the Project Director, the Exhibit Designer performs the following:
- Plans, designs, and oversees construction and installation of permanent and temporary exhibits and displays: Confers with executive, curatorial, and exhibit staff members to determine theme, content, interpretative or informational purpose, and planned location of exhibit, to discuss budget, marketing, and time limitations, and to plan production schedule for fabrication and installation of exhibit components. Estimate exhibit-related costs including materials, construction, and printing.
- Prepares drawings of proposed exhibit, including detailed construction, floor plan, and special effect diagrams and material specifications. Examines artifacts/objects to be included in exhibits to plan display and casework design. Plans for location-specific issues such as space limitations, traffic flow patterns, and safety concerns. Develops exhibits in compliance with ADA guidelines.
- Submits plan for approval, and adapts plan as needed to serve intended purpose or to conform to budget or fabrication restrictions.
- Oversees design and production of artwork (text panels, object labels, graphics), placement of collection objects or informational materials, and exhibit components (including media, experiences and interactives) to ensure that sets or exhibits meet design, budget, and schedule requirements.
- Ensures that the museum’s exhibits and the public areas reflect a high quality visitor experience both visually and experientially.
- Works with executive leadership and exhibit development team to determine future exhibits. Creates and maintains the exhibit calendar in collaboration with the exhibit development team.
- Manages relationships and contracting for vendors supporting exhibits needs
Experience, Education, or Skills Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, interior design, environmental design, architecture or equivalent work experience
- 3–4 years experience in 3D design in gallery, museum, theatrical, events setting or related environments, including but not limited to floor plan design, construction drawing production, and interactive design
- Proficiency in AutoCAD or Vectorworks, SketchUp, InDesign, Adobe Creative Suite/ Photoshop
- Experience organizing and archiving documents and other filetypes
- Knowledge of museum standards and practices in regards to art and object collection
- Understanding of permanent and traveling exhibit design concepts and needs
- Creative and artistic design solutions ability
- Ability to work effectively in collaborative setting with multiple stakeholders and to multi-task and reprioritize as necessary while serving as an advocate for design and accessibility
- Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills
- Good sense of humor and motivation to lead the creative process by example, with emphasis on positivity, flexibility, and constructive dialogue
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge and proficiency in Revit or other 3D building information modeling software
- Experience designing in unconventional and diverse environments (e.g., outdoor space, historic architecture)
- Experience creating multimedia, digital, and/ or projection experiences
