The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis seeks an Associate Curator to join the curatorial team of this dynamic university art museum. Founded in 1881, the Kemper Art Museum is nationally accredited with an internationally renowned collection of predominantly modern and contemporary European and American art. Primary responsibilities of the position include research, exhibition, interpretation, publication, and development of the Museum's permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. The successful candidate will be an intellectual authority on modern art with proven ability to develop ambitious exhibition and publication programs and pursue collaborations on interdisciplinary exhibition projects with the Sam Fox School and the University's Department of Art History & Archaeology in Arts & Sciences. The Associate Curator recommends acquisitions; plays an active role in fundraising; develops relations with collectors, donors, and the public; and helps prioritize and achieve short- and long-range institutional goals. This position represents the Museum, the School, and the University locally, nationally, and internationally.
The Associate Curator is a senior staff position reporting to the Director and Chief Curator.
Responsibilities:
– Research, develop, coordinate, and execute special exhibitions based on the permanent collection and loans
– Present the permanent collection in collaboration with the curatorial team
– Research and write scholarly publications related to special exhibitions and the permanent collection
– Oversee exhibition and related project budgets, as well as development and negotiation of outside loans and exhibition contracts
– Assist the Director and Chief Curator with the development of the permanent collection, including acquisitions, deaccessions, and collections management
– Assist the Director and Chief Curator in developing broad Museum support, including fundraising, donor relations, and public relations
– Participate in interdisciplinary initiatives of the Sam Fox School
– Develop relations and programming with academic units across the University, including serving as curatorial liaison with faculty curators and outside scholars
– Develop relations with peer institutions and artists
– Disseminate research through teaching, public lectures, and internal as well as external publications – Research and write grants related to exhibitions
– Teach at least one class every two years
Required qualifications:
– PhD in Art History with expertise in modern art, or closely related field; ABD (all but dissertation) near completion considered.
– Minimum of three years of museum experience with progressively responsible curatorial experience and demonstrated excellence in acquisitions, exhibitions, and scholarly museum publications
– Commitment to work within a University setting
– Ability to collaborate with university faculty, museum staff, professional colleagues, and museum supporters
– Excellent written and oral communication skills
Preferred qualifications:
– PhD in Art History with expertise in modern art, including 19th-century art
– Proficiency in one or more foreign languages appropriate to the field of scholarship with fluency strongly preferred
– Teaching experience preferred
