The Colburn School is a world class performing arts school where a renowned faculty provides instruction in music, dance and drama to dedicated students of all ages.
Since 1950, the school has equipped students with the skills, support and opportunity needed to achieve their highest artistic goals. The school's state of-the-art campus is located in the 'heart-of-art' of downtown Los Angeles, neighboring Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Music Center, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) and the planned Broad Museum.
Summary of the Position
The Public Relations Manager will direct publicity programs and campaigns in order to create public awareness and improve the image and public profile of the School. Responsibilities include developing brand awareness and securing local, national and international media coverage. In conjunction with the Vice President of Communications and senior management, the PR Manager will also be a key player in the successful implementation of the School's brand strategy.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Strategy and Planning
* Responsible for further developing and implementing Colburn's PR strategy; managing the School's profile and the profile of students, faculty, education initiatives and concerts.
* Work within the School's marketing, brand strategies and educational goals.
* Support the PR engagements of Colburn artists around the world.
* Develop The Colburn School's messaging, audience and supporter base.
* Work alongside the Development Department in support of fundraising efforts.
* Campaign creation and implementation
* Media List. Plan the development and usage of a Media List and create database.
* Media coverage. Generate local, national and international media coverage for Colburn's work in education and thought leadership, and its faculty, students and Deans.
* Copywriting. Write copy for social media, promotional mailings, advertisements, press releases, feature stories and newsletters.
* Work with School's webmaster to update and develop content on editorial sections of the website.
* Promotional materials. Augment the School's current media materials including electronic press kits, and electronic press packs and video content.
* News agenda. Promote the School and its leaders into news agendas, locally, nationally and internationally in both trade and consumer media outlets.
Relationship Management
* Strengthen the School's relationships with the local, national and international media and trade media.
* Attend marketing, event and planning meetings within the School and with its partners.
Other
* Attend all Colburn concerts and host the invited media.
* Provide structured and regular reports to the Vice President of Communications.
Required knowledge, skills and education
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations or Marketing or related field. 5 to 7 years of experience in public relations. Experience in fields of music, arts, and/or cultural publicity and promotions preferred. A network of relevant press contacts is a plus.
* Superior writing, editing and proofreading skills that produce professional quality material;
* Ability to research and create compelling feature stories and news articles;
* Professional demeanor and positive attitude;
* Articulate speaker and ability to conduct presentations for many different audiences and constituencies including School Trustees, parents, volunteers, alumni, students, administration, faculty, staff and media;
* Ability to balance independent work and collaborative efforts;
* Excellent organizational skills;
* Outstanding attentiveness to detail and quality;
* Flexibility to work within the needs of an academic environment and to work evenings and weekends.
