The College for Creative Studies (CCS)

position of Chair of Fine Arts. The Chair reports to the Dean of
Undergraduate Studies and is responsible for the management and future
direction of the Fine Arts department.
The position requires a dynamic, imaginative, and innovative leader with a
strong record of accomplishment in education administration, art practice,
and teaching. Candidates must have an MFA in a fine art practice (i.e.,
painting, sculpture, new media, intermedia, etc.) with a minimum of five
years college administrative and teaching experience. Applicants must be
active, practicing artists with very strong exhibiting records and
publications. The preferred candidate will be well versed in traditional and
nontraditional media in traditional studio, post-studio, and virtual
environments. A solid knowledge of contemporary art theory and practice,
including relational aesthetics, community outreach, and other participatory
practices, and an established global, multicultural orientation are other
qualities being sought.
CCS is a private, nonprofit institution located in the heart of Detroit’s
Cultural Center with a world-class encyclopedic museum, contemporary art
museum, commercial and cooperative galleries, and affordable studio space
nearby. The College is widely recognized as one of the nation’s leading art
and design schools with state-of-the art facilities to support the complete
range of art making, from traditional art forms such as painting,
glassblowing, foundry, and printmaking to the most contemporary systems,
including the latest digital imaging technology and rapid prototyping output
tools. The College’s location in one of the world’s cutting-edge urban
environments provides a perfect laboratory for investigating various modes
of art making and their interface with diverse audiences, communities, and
environments. The College currently enrolls over 1,300 degree students in 12
majors: Advertising, Art Education, Crafts, Entertainment Arts, Fine Arts,
Graphic Design, Illustration, Interior Design, Product Design, Photography,
and Transportation Design.
The College values candidates who have experience working in settings with
students from diverse backgrounds. Applicants are required to submit a cover
letter, resume, statement of teaching philosophy, and digital samples of the
applicant’s work--and the work of their students--on either CD or via online
