Venice Arts mission is to ignite youths’ imagination, mentor their
creativity, and expand their sense of
possibility through high quality, accessible media-based arts education
programs. Venice Arts also
serves as a catalyst for people of all ages, living in low-income or
underrepresented communities, to
create and share personal and community stories through photography, film,
and multi-media.
POSITION DESCRIPTION: MEDIA ARTS ASSISTANT
Working under the Art Mentoring Program Manager, the Media Arts Assistant is
responsible for
general media and technical support across the organization, including the
following, specific duties
and responsibilities:
1. Tech / Web
• Manage the backend of our interactive educational website, Venice Arts
Online, including
posting news updates, organizing online galleries and projects, updating
classes and the
online library, and problem-solving issues as they arise, alongside the
Venice Arts webmaster.
• Help upload end-of-cycle and special project work selections, and other
relevant content to the
web.
• Provide first-line IT and OS support across the entire organization.
2. Archive
• Digitize and deliver film for the Archive, as well as for display on the
web at the close of each
workshop cycle
• Scan, retouch, and import selected files to Portfolio, assuring that they
are appropriately coded
(titles, names, project, keywords, etc.)
• Archive select photographs, animation, and other artwork.
• Maintain the book and video libraries, updating these resource lists on
the Server and Web,
and supervising the loan and return of materials.
• Handle all image requests and preparation (color correcting, resizing,
printing, etc.).
3. Maintenance of Labs
• Set up, maintain, and organize the darkroom and equipment; process black &
white film, as
requested.
• Maintain the digital labs at the Gallery, Vera Davis Center, and the
mobile (laptop) lab, including
wiping drives and installing new or updated software.
• Assure that the software external drive is kept updated with the most
current software and
related licenses.
• Assure that video and camera equipment is well maintained and organized at
both the Gallery
and the Vera Davis Center.
• Maintain an inventory of darkroom and digital lab equipment, including
computers, cameras,
audio equipment, etc.
• Regularly inventory materials and supplies in the darkroom, inks and
papers for the large format
printer, and digital lab materials at the Vera Davis Center, creating a
restock order in a timely
manner to be submitted to the Program Manager.
4. Classroom Support
• For select classes, assist with set-up and breakdown, including set-up of
cameras, computers,
and any other necessary equipment.
• Assist with file management for classes not assigned a Teaching Assistant.
• Coordinate and communicate about the use and return of all equipment,
materials, supplies,
and the Venice Arts van, etc.
5. Youth Exhibits
• Provide support for exhibit printing and installation, as requested.
• Document, correct, and archive all gallery exhibitions.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
The ideal candidate is a graduate of a photography, photojournalism, or
multi-media program with
experience working in analog and digital formats. She or he must be
extremely well organized, detail
oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities. She or he must demonstrate
a high level of expertise
with cameras, computers, and software, particularly image management
software. PhotoShop CS5 and
Lightroom 3 a must. Familiarity wth FinalCut Pro a plus. She or he should be
familiar with a variety of
scanners and large-format Epson inkjet printers. She or he must be extremely
comfortable with
technology and be experienced with tech-based problem solving. Applicant
must know the ins and
outs of Mac OS X 10.5 or higher, but need only have a basic knowledge of
HTML to apply. Must have
car and valid California Driver's License with no violations for the past 5
years.
Must be committed to the education and development of youth; an
understanding of the needs of “at-
risk”, low-income youth is a plus, as is experience in a mentoring program.
Salary: The position is 40 hours per week, and is paid at a rate of $15 per
hour. The position earns
benefits.
