LA Commons develops artistic and cultural projects that reveal the unique stories of L.A.’s neighborhoods, and engages visitors through cultural tours. LA Commons and USC are hosting a unique project to engage 5 artist/designers to collaborate with a core youth arts team (15-25 years old) to create light pole banner designs that will be installed on over 125 light poles along Exposition, Vermont, Jefferson, Hoover, and the Figueroa Corridor The banners will share the unique stories of neighborhood and will mark the opening of the Metro Rail Expo line.
The Role the Artist/Designers in this project will be:
1. To participate in story/image gathering process.
2. To mentor the Core Youth Arts Team to foster youth in the development of skills in image making and design.
3. To design and incorporate youth design and community images gathered into banner designs
4. To collaborate with team and Artistic Director to support the creation of visual cohesion for the entire banner project.
5. To attend the Opening Celebration
2011Timeline
Weekly workshops weeks of July 26-October 27, 2011 plus design work
Late July-August– Story gathering and Design
Mid August-September – Complete design workLate September-Mid October– Design reviews and refinement
Late October – Final Art work completed
TBD – Opening Celebration and banners installed along USC project areas
Artist Qualifications
1. Experience in visual and public arts.
2. Experience working with youth and community.
3. Familiarity with USC neighborhood
4. Interest and experience in collaborative process
Compensation
$2000 stipend for each Artist will be payable in thirds at the beginning, middle and conclusion of the project.
$200 additional design fee when final art is approved
This fee includes conducting weekly workshops with a small team of youth, story gathering, 3 team meetings, and completion of design work for the banner.
