PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The Digital Histories Project is an effort to digitally collect, preserve and analyze personal, community and historical cultural data. The project was developed to preserve and revitalize the history and culture of Little Tokyo and its residents. Instructors will train primarily older ethnic minority adult participants to use multimedia applications and technologies to collect and produce cultural and historic data in the form of digital narratives, personal stories, and community histories. Visual Communications will disseminate the stories by making student projects available for viewing at the annual Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival and on the web.

This 12-week course introduces non-linear video editing concepts and techniques using the Final Cut Express editing system. Course topics include: video camera techniques, capturing footage, editing techniques such as match cuts and transitions, titling techniques and audio mixing. Students will use these editing concepts to edit their final projects to be completed at the end of this course. There will be 4 assignments in addition to the final project.

The Digital Histories Project is a partnership between Visual Communications and the Little Tokyo Service Center CDC / DISKovery Computer Learning Center.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assist in developing curriculum and training activities for a 12-week course, meeting 2 hours a day, 2 days a week.

• Prepare and lead lectures and lessons during the 12-week session, as well as participate in curriculum development planning meetings prior to project.

• Disseminate and enforce Diskovery Center lab policies including, but not limited to, equipment check-out procedures, food and beverage policies.

• Meet regularly with project partner and Visual Communications staff to plan, implement and evaluate program.

• Teach others how to use Final Cut Express software

• Assist students in producing and completing 5-minute final projects that are ready for public screening.

• Help organize a graduation ceremony and community screening.

• Compile a final DVD that will be presented at the course graduation, and make copies for each student

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must be detail-oriented, patient, an engaging instructor, and exceptionally organized

• Working background in video production and editing using Final Cut required

• Proven ability to work quickly and meet tight deadlines?

• Knowledge of Asian Pacific American community and history preferred

• Ability to work well independently, prioritize and handle multiple tasks

• Excellent communication skills
