Associate Educator, School and Teacher Programs
The Skirball Cultural Center (SCC) of Los Angeles, a dynamic institution rooted in Jewish heritage and American democratic ideals that is devoted to exploring connections across cultures and communities, seeks an Associate Educator for its school programs. As part of a pilot program, the Associate Educator and several part-time gallery teachers will be hired to enhance the interactive, experiential dimension of the Skirball's school tours, which will be co-facilitated by paid staff and volunteer docents.
The Associate Educator is a member of the Education Department and reports to the Head of School and Teacher Programs. S/he works closely with other school and teacher program staff.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Creates, develops, implements and edits school-tour curriculum related to the Skirball's permanent and changing exhibitions, including pre-visit, post-visit, and on-site tour materials for museum and performance-based programs. Periodically assesses school and teacher programs for relevancy, learning outcomes, and appeal to students; revises as needed.
• Serves as lead developer of educational programs for grades 6-12, assessing and updating current offerings and training educators to deliver them. Will begin immediately on a revision of the Skirball's Archaeology school program for 6th grade.
• Co-facilitates school tours on a regular basis.
• Trains, observes, and evaluates paid and volunteer gallery educators, monitoring their performance, answering questions, and providing relevant supplemental materials and instruction to enrich their knowledge and enhance tour content and facilitation skills.
• Generates other educational offerings as needed, including student/family guides and in-school residency programs.
• Creates and manages budget lines for program and special project development; ensures expenditures comply with approved budgets.
• Attends and actively participates in staff meetings; brings agenda items; assumes leadership role for areas of expertise; participates in discussions.
• Develops and maintains pedagogy and curriculum development skills through participation in workshops, further education and reading/researching professional literature.
• Performs all duties in accordance with the Skirball's established mission and values.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor's degree or higher in education, museum education, art education or related discipline.
• Demonstrated skill in developing and implementing educational programs in a non-traditional setting for teachers, students, or families.
• Demonstrated skill and experience in writing curriculum materials for use in non-traditional educational settings for adult and student learners.
• Professional experience in museum education, arts education, or related area.
• Knowledge of Jewish culture.
• Knowledge of archaeology, especially archaeology of the Near East.
• Proven success in working with and recruiting teacher and student audiences in creative settings.
• Excellent oral and listening communications skills and the ability to work effectively with people of diverse cultures, ages, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Knowledge of the various forms of media used in educational programs.
• A willingness to assist where needed; accept and support change; and recognize individual differences when interacting with team members.
• Knowledge of the various forms of media used in educational programs.
• Excellent written communication skills, including strong editing skills.
• Demonstrated ability to develop productive relationships within an organization and within the field.
• A keen appreciation and understanding of the Skirball Cultural Center mission and philosophy.
• Organizational skills sufficient to plan and organize projects and initiatives.
• Personal computer skills; proficiency utilizing Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
• Current and valid driver's license and proof of insurance if using vehicle while traveling on the Center's business.
