Artistic Director Job Overview

Position Title:
Artistic Director (one of two Artistic Directors of the Company, the successful candidate will partner with current Artistic Director Gates McFadden)

Reports to:
Board of Directors

Compensation:
Volunteer Position with Stipend

Position summary:
The Artistic Directors work closely with the Managing Director and Producing Director to fulfill Ensemble Studio Theatre-LA’s mission and organizational goals as articulated by the Board of Directors and to maintain the highest professional and artistic standards possible. Responsible for overall artistic vision and programming choices. Creates and implements developmental programming. The chief officers responsible for unearned (contributed) income streams, including fund raising events. The Artistic Directors chair EST-LA’s Cabinet, serve on the Board of Directors, and are CEO/Presidents of our non-profit corporation.

Estimated 25-35 hours per week, more during productions

Frequent evening and weekend hours required

Check writing authority (checks over $1,000 must be co-signed)

Supervises:
Managing Director, Producing Director, Literary Manager, Developmental Program Coordinators/Moderators, Artistic Interns

Evaluation:
The performance of the Artistic Director is evaluated annually by the Board of Directors according to a range of qualitative and quantitative performance measures agreed upon prior to the beginning of each new program year.

Experience/Skills:
In addition to a passion for theatre and commitment to the mission of EST-LA, we seek an individual of artistic and entrepreneurial vision; a self-motivated multi-tasker with demonstrated leadership and non-profit managerial skills especially team building; strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; proven fund raising ability; experienced in new play development and program creation, strategic planning, budgeting, contract negotiation; demonstrated ability to produce Los Angeles 99-seat productions in the $30,000-$60,000 range; experienced in marketing and audience development activities within this budget range; familiarity with the national developmental theatre scene; familiarity with the Los Angeles theatre community, including producers, artists, designers, production personnel, publicists, unions, venues, theatrical support organizations, press, awards, significant local productions, etc.
