CounterPULSE in San Francisco is currently preparing for its Performing
Diaspora Festival in November 2009. CounterPULSE's Performing
Diaspora is a festival, residency program, commissioning program, and
symposium featuring dance, music, theater, media and interdisciplinary
artists who are using traditional forms as a basis for experimentation
and innovation.
Performing Diaspora is open to any performing artist or group residing
in California.
Created in partnership with several local and statewide organizations,
Performing Diaspora is a two-year initiative challenging artists and
audiences to explore the evocative questions associated with this work.
Performing Diaspora:
1. Provides space and resources for artists who are using traditional
and culturally-specific performance as a basis for experimentation and
innovation, offering artists a supportive and professional environment
for creativity, connectivity, and bridging communities.
2. Instigates a lively, extended conversation between artists,
academics, critics, and audience about issues of culture, tradition, and
innovation within the context of heritage-based performance.
3. Generates dialogue and collaboration among artists across
California and provides an effective structure for sharing, learning,
documenting and creating. An ongoing online network will communicate
and disseminate this important work.
4. Fosters intercultural exchange and understanding while countering
mainstream misrepresentation and the invisibility of underrepresented
traditional arts forms, challenging and expanding ideas about culture
and representation.
ONLINE VIDEO WORKSHOP will be available by beginning of March to assist
artists outside the Bay Area, however, for specific questions or more
information, please contact macklin@counterpulse.org or
