Call for Writing Submissions
First Draft Deadline is May 1st, 2009
Las Vegas fine art curator Michael Todoran will be
accepting essays whose subject can demonstrate a dynamic relationship
with the concept of layers for the 2009 Las Vegas Book festival. All
essays will be reviewed by a panel of writers (to be announced) and
the most appropriate works will be published in a book and ready for
display at the 2009 Las Vegas Book festival on November 5th, 2009.
A total of $1,000 in stipends is available to the top three entries.
First place shall receive $500 and the two runner ups shall each
receive a $250 dollar stipend.
The intention of Layers is to celebrate and display the writing works
of International, National, and local Las Vegas writers using an
adapted format of a fine art show.
Premise of essays:
Successful essays shall write on a subject of their choice and
demonstrate to the audience how layers interact, shape, or are
utilized by their subject. Layers can demonstrate a theoretical model
such as in government or discuss a more literal exhibit of
dermatology. For example, if your subject is government you might
consider writing about local, state, and national hierarchies and how
their interaction affects the function, efficiency, or relationships
the government is involved in. If your interest lies in dermatology
the layers of skin (hypodermis, dermis, and epidermis) would be an
appropriate angle to expand upon.
Writers are strongly encouraged to examine and write about topics that
they are passionate about. Subject matter can go beyond topical
issues, be humorous, scientific, or science fiction. Any intelligent
well written work on any subject will be considered.
Essays that will be considered for awards shall exhibit more advanced
concepts of layers such as its transparency or embedded properties.
· Essays shall be a minimum of 500 words and not exceed 2000 words
· Poetry submissions have no minimum but must not exceed 500 words
· Fiction and Science Fiction ARE acceptable
· Supporting artwork or diagrams will NOT be accepted
· Deadlines for 1st and 2nd drafts shall be met and any
variation of this can alter the timeline for publishing and could void
your entry
· All essays will be published on the Layers website or blog
(except for any submissions that neglect to meet the objective or are
blatantly crass)
· Not all essays will be published in the book
· There will be a $15.00 non-refundable entry fee
