Artspace NZ is seeking its next Director. The role presents a unique opportunity to make a significant contribution to the development and creative vision of an organisation that has been operating at the forefront of contemporary art in New Zealand Aotearoa for 30 years.

As part of the New Zealand art map, Artspace NZ defines a particular frequency of high-energy activity. Its rich archive reflects exceptional contributions from different generations of artists, curators, directors, designers and other creative practitioners from New Zealand and abroad.

The institution’s core mission is to generate a dynamic, open platform for risk-taking art practices, as well as to provide artists with a critical and non-commercial environment to work in. It is dedicated to commissioning, producing and presenting new ideas in contemporary art, bridging the local to the international in ways that are unique to Auckland Tāmaki Makaurau, to New Zealand and to its audiences.

Located on Karangahape Road, an area of central Auckland that is undergoing rapid and complex changes as the city’s population swells, Artspace NZ is committed to continuing to learn and deepen its cultural relevance through exploration of mātauranga Māori, the Pacific context and connections with New Zealand’s diverse audiences. Within this rich environment the new Director will formulate and drive a vision for Artspace NZ and ensure its successful implementation with the support of a small team and in consultation with the Trustees.

The Artspace NZ Director will have the overall responsibility for all aspects of the organisation's work, including artistic, curatorial, financial, operational and fundraising activities. They will develop an annual programme of approximately seven exhibitions along with accompanying public, education and publishing programmes.

The role involves a fixed-term contract that has typically been three years, however alternative terms will be considered.
